How To Find Your Personal Style

Updated: Mar 11, 2019

With so many trends and clothing stores, it can be a little hard to figure out what moves you. I used to wear a lot of trends because that's what all my friends would wear. Now I simply wear what I like because I like it. That's it.

The best piece of fashion advice in finding your own personal style is that:

Fashion isn’t perfect. When something is a little off, it makes the outfit more interesting. Don’t be afraid if your outfit is a little weird. It’s unexpected. It’s a little mysterious...a little bit of fun. This allows you the freedom to experiment!

Experiment. Experiment. Experiment.

Not everything has to be perfect. And don’t worry about trying to fit into all the trends. I find that boring. Don’t dress because someone told you what’s “in”. Find clothes that flatter and fit you! Not anybody else. You dress for yourself. Period. And don’t forget to have fun.

Now there are pieces that will complement better and other times will clash more...but with that said, you can make things that clash look awesome! Sometimes it's fun to break the rules! This is the time where people will probably look at me like I'm crazy.

I want people to take away that fashion is an art form and shouldn't be constricted to trends. I love when people are adventurous and wear totally outside their comfort zone.

Start a Pinterest Board

Save anything that you like and boom...you have your own little compilation of items and maybe you can see a general theme of the styles you like. If you notice you save a lot of boho items, try some out when you go to the mall.

Also, research some of your favorite celebrities or brands and save some of your favorite looks to board as well.

Sometimes I like to look at old magazines just for fun and see if anything catches my eye too.

Fashion is so fun when you try things you didn’t before and when it works, it’s addicting to see what else in your very own closet what you can create.

Try Unexpected Contrasts

In fact, I will match almost everything in one outfit and the next do the complete opposite. Personally, I like when things are a little weird. For example, I like pairing a Victorian blouse with a leather skirt with a neon purse.

I remember in high school, I desperately wanted to look like all my friends but now.....I want to find unique pieces and stand out. And everything you own shouldn’t be expensive either. I like to splurge on items I know are classic staples that I know I’m going to love forever. That item will always be.....a leather jacket.

So if I came across a really cool sexy one which I can afford, I would have no problem spending money on it. But everything else, I can suffice.

Go to Thrift Shops

I love going to thrift shops because you never know what you're going to find! You can find really unique pieces and some inspiration.

Plus, you can also save some money as well! What's not to love?

Learn More

One of my favorite books on fashion is called the “The One Hundred” by Nina Garcia and has so many great tips for creating fun outfit combinations.

If you want to learn more about fashion, I highly recommend her book! She definitely embraces the ability to allow yourself to test out different styles and not be confined to trends.

Just remember to give yourself the freedom to not have to follow trends and don't stress about making the perfect outfit.
